April 21st 2014

HOLA!

This week has been crazy because I am in a trio right now! Temp trio, with a Hermana named Hermana Sarceño. one of the sisters has some medical issues and we live close to her doctor, but she is improving and will be moved to her area on Thursday

The Medel Family
. It has been rough, but good in the long run because I am learning a lot. She is from Guatemala and she is very funny.

I am starting to freak out a little because of something president said about how many sisters are coming in next transfer. He said not to be surprised if I train. So there is that crazy thing. AH.

We had 3 baptisms this week! One was a young lady named Korayma, she is 12. She is the little sister to the ward mission leader here. She is very sweet and very shy. She has been waiting a long time to get baptized, because her parents wouldnt give her permission. But after a few years; she got it! I am very excited for here.

The other 2 were the Familia Medel! The Dad and the Son! The Mom is going to be baptized next week. It was really cool!

I ran into a very cute couple that remind me of Christopher and Bekah! They are very cute and funny and have been married for about a year. We ate with them one day, and when they served us dessert, it looked like eggs and beans, but it was actually plain yogurt with a half a peach in the middle (to look like an egg) and the "beans" were chocolate covered raisins. It reminded me so much of my brothers humor! It was hilarious.

Jessica's District before Changes
I have been reading in Joseph Smith history. I really am inspired by the patience of Joseph Smith. He waited a long time after he saw God and Jesus Christ before anything really happened. During that time, it was not easy. He was persecuted and laughed at and struggled. But he knew that he had seen God and he knew that there was a reason. I hope that I can have that much patience. It is important to remeber that spiritual expierences that you have and keep striving for more and leting your testimony grow by being patient. I love you all!

Short email, I want to write more individual people this week.

This week, someone contacted us. 4 people have contacted us. This is not normal. Veracruz is crazy guys. I think that part of the reason is that I am always praying because I am more scared of contacting than anything else, so God was like- okay the people will just contact you. In the MTC an apostle said that for every door someone knocks on in Germany there is a baptism in Veracruz, now I haven´t had any baptisms... but the people here are very receptive.

Bad news- last weeks computer had a virus that deleted all of my pictures. so yay.

I went on divisions (splits? what is the English word) with the sister training leader. She has a sprained ankle, so that was pretty chill. They live RIGHT BY the ocean. It is awesome.

Funny thing- sometimes I say things in English to see if my companion can find the word in spanish in her brain because there are a lot of cognates and that is how I translate- this morning I said "summary" and she started singing "yellow submarine". It was hilarious.
I LOVE YOU! BYE!

I ATE WEIRD FOOD April 7 2014

HEY EVERYONE!

So I ate octopus. It was very gross and I hope I do not have to do that again. It smelled weird and the tentacles got stuck to my teeth a little. There was shrimp too and that was really good. It was a huge gift from a member that took us to lunch, so I downed it all. And then there was more food. I did my best to eat all that I could. Weirdest thing ever, and I think they just prepare seafood weird here. Like all the fish still have heads. I would like the chicken please. ;)

SOOO Conference was amazing!! I especially loved Elder Uchtdorfs talk, when he said that what we needed was gratitude I honestly did not expect that. It gave me a really neat perspective on what it means to be grateful in your attitude, not just for things. I really loved that. Other points that stood out to me, and were really said a lot, trust God, be willing to follow the prophet (which is also trusting God) and be in the world and not of it. AH I love conference. I am so glad I got to watch it in English. Me and Hermana Terry in a little room with a laptop:)

So we have been blessed to teach an amazing family, I am pretty sure I have talked about them before. They are so willing to do anything to be on the path to righteousness. Fermin, the father, told us about how much faith he has and asked us if he needed to shave because he noticed not many have facial hair in church. I told him no, my dad has a full beard:) They have gone to church in their nicest clothes possible for the past 2 weeks, and this week they showed up to conference all in new sunday clothes:) it was something that really showed their devotion to this. I love them so much and it is really great to see their progress.

We have a few new people we are teaching. One of them is this older guy- we have only taught him through his window a few times. I was trying to figure out what it was about him. I knew he was spiritual but in a very different way. After a lesson at his window, my companion turned to me and said "hippie" and I knew that was what it was. He said something to the affect of Jesus is in everyone. I am very excited to teach him about the holy ghost.

So, PRESIDENT TREVIÑO GOT CALLED TO THE 70. I am very excited about this. He is going to do very well. I wonder if he feels worried about the language like I did when I got my mission call. I am sure it is a very different feeling but I like to think that I can relate to important people sometimes:) I love you all, pictures to go on my blog!

I am trying to get better at managing email time, March 31 2014

Hola everybody! So this week was rough, adjustment is still in progress and I think it will be for a while, but it's ¨what may¨ and it´s coming and I am trying to love it! A kid in the MTC always said ¨come what may, and you love that and then come what may and you have to love that too.¨

I can´t remember what I have all written here, but Hermana Terry, from my district in the CCM [MTC] is here in my SAME AREA and I love her to death. God knew that I could not handle having no way to express my true feelings, I already struggle with that in English. I love her to death and she is always there and has my back. Constantly concentrating on a language is really hard, it is nice to have someone that I can talk to in English if I have to.

We have been focusing on strengthening the barrio [ward]. There are a lot of menos activos aqui [less active members] and we really need the support of the ward. SOOOO I had to speak in the third hour of church. Since it was the 5th Sunday, they were all together. Our companions wanted Hermana Terry and I to speak because we know just enough words to be super direct, and no on can really get mad at us because we are so new. It went pretty well, I was shaking pretty bad, but I remembered Spanish. I hope I didn´t come across wrong, I was pretty direct.

We also got to watch women's conference! We got super lucky, we were going to have to watch it in Spanish, but the lady next to us had an iPad and so Hermana Terry and I went in the other room and watched it. It was weird to see the conference center and not be close to home. I had a strange feeling of how far away I am. I also could really feel how true the church is, EVERYWHERE. I just sneezed and everyone in this place said salud [Bless You]. I pretty much love Mexico. Don´t worry I am doing great! I think I come across my emails more positive than I really am, but that is better than the opposite! But really, It´s coming and I am loving it.
We have been searching for more people to teach. It is hard and I am scared to contact, but working on it.
Well, I love you all so much, have a great week, hasta luego!

March 24 2014 Mas Tiempo

Well, prayers are answered. Last week the reason that I didn't have any time was because we ended up having to walk to a different internet place than normal, but this week, the mission president decided that we can have 1.5 hrs to write from now on! so YAY. haha. I almost don't know how to not rush. Many negatives there, perdón [Sorry].
I decided that I want to start off and answer a few questions so that you all can know what its like a little better.
How far are you from the coast and the temple?
My mission extends hasta el mar [to the ocean]. Yup. The ocean is in my mission. We don't see it very much though, and it is going to be hard to describe why... all the houses are connected. One side of the wall is a wall of one house and the other side of the wall is the wall of the next house over. and there are tons of houses. you cant see the ocean through the gap between houses, because that doesn't exist. you have to be on the beach to see the ocean. But I have gotten a few little glimpses. Cerca [Close to] the temple, you can see it better. the temple is like a 10 min taxi ride south. The temple is in Mocambo. I  am in Costa Verde. now go google map that! (haha)
What is the temperature during the day and at night?
I don't really know. It feels like the cold around here is 70, and goes up after that. The humidity confuses me, but in all honesty, I can really see how being closer to the sun makes a difference. The sun even looks bigger. I am always sweaty, but not totally miserable. I am adapting. And sometimes it is not bad.

So I want you all to know that I really do love it here. I love the people, and love the work. It is not all unicorns and butterflies all the time though. There are very very hard times. But I try not to write about those much, because they are not important for you, just necessary for me to grow.

We have been teaching the most adorable family, The Familia Medel. It is a couple, I would guess in their 30's and their 2 boys, one is 15 and one is 6. I love them! They are so excited about all of this, especially the dad, Fermin, which is really amazing, he wants the best for his family! They came to the ward talent show this week (which I will talk about in a sec) and they also came to church! It was ward conference! I swear it was perfect for that family. They talked about why we are all missionaries and the purpose of missionaries and then in gospel principles they talked about tithing and then in sociedad socorro [Relief Society] the lesson was "friends and family for eternity". I love when things flow! Especially when I can see the flow regardless of how hard I have to concentrate to translate. It was amazing!

I want to take a sec and encourage all of you that are reading this to help the missionaries. Before this, I did not realize how much the missionaries need the members! We cant do this by ourselves! when the missionaries ask you for references, think hard. I know you all could think of someone who at least could use some peace. Help them, They need you. remember

"27 Verily say, men should baanxiously engaged in good cause,and do many things of their own free will, and bring to pass much righteousness;
28 For the power is in them, wherein they are aagents untothemselves. And inasmuch as men do good they shall in nowiselose their breward."
We have this amazing message, SHARE IT. Always be thinking of how you could help those around you. Look for those who God has prepared to recieve your message. It is a circle, We learn the gosple, we build up our testimony, and then we SHARE IT so that we can keep learning. Don't get stuck on one of those points. The Lord promises that if you are brave enough to rely on the spirit and take the first step, you will know what to say. What is the first step? open your mouth. (D&C 33:10) I challenge you all to try it. Dont get caught up thinking what to say. Pray for missionary expierences, they are awesome :)
The talent show- Let me just tell you right now, it was unlike anything I have ever experienced. NO ONE SANG EXCEPT US! Everyone danced and did stand up comedy and skits and mre dances and stuff I didn't understand. It was so crazy and awesome. The enthusiasm of the people here is fantastic! They want everyone to know how happy we are. The little 8 yr old's did a dance... they were the best 8 year old dancers I have ever seen. At like a competition level. All genders, all different sizes. It was to a mash up of a bunch of songs. I was laughing because it was so amazing- I have no idea how they remembered the whole thing. They are all just so dedicated here. I love it!
We sang, my companion and I. A jenny Phillips song. It was ok because I sang in English and I already knew the song, but I didn't know we were doing it tell that day. It was an interesting experience. You get used to just doing what you gotta do out here.
Well I love you all so much! I send pictures to my sister and she puts them on the blog, but if you want them sent to your email, let me know. [There are no pictures this week]
Love you!
Hermana Jensen
p.s. everyone gives us fruit all the time, and it tastes so good. Way better than back home. I didn't know I was eating an orange until someone told me I was.
